Freedom Fries – NISSAN Outdoor Games 07
From June 28 to July 1 2007, the world elite in outdoor sports gathered at Interlaken in Switzerland for the NISSAN OUTDOOR GAMES BY COLUMBIA. Mountain biking, kayak, rock climbing, paragliding and base jump made up the five disciplines.
‘Freedom Fries’ – Nissan Outdoor Games 2007, by David Arnaud, Eider technical advisor:
Over the last few years, the Outdoor Games have become one of the unmissable meets for several outdoor sport disciplines. And justifiably so! The concept is simple, bringing together teams of 5 competitors in 5 different disciplines (base-jump, kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking and paragliding) with each team having five days to make a five-minute film.
At the end of week, the films are submitted to a jury. Everything takes place in Interlaken , Switzerland , which has some excellent spots for all five disciplines. This edition was my 3 rd participation, but my first as team leader / film director, and I was fully aware of the challenge it represented… It was non-stop work, filming during the day and editing into the early hours of the morning!
My "Freedom Fries" team included Sam Beaugey in base-jump, William Destouches on bike, Joakim Ramsamy for rock climbing, Arnaud Rocher the paraglider, photos by Cyril Crespeau, as well as Benjamin Durand and myself in the kayaks.
The plot of our film: sitting in front of his television, a bored and uninspired teenager is jolted from his inertia by the “Freedom Fries" clip. Our antihero quickly takes an interest in some spectacular photos of kayaking, climbing, paragliding, base-jump and mountain biking that feature in the rock band’s latest hit. Spurred by his enthusiasm, our teenager will go so far as to imitate his newfound idols… and that’s all we’ll reveal!
Members of the five teams come from eight countries and three continents. The second edition of this special event has remained true to its origins: combine extreme sport performances with live video production – a festival of adrenalin for athletes and spectators alike.
